Happiness Happens Month is celebrated annually in August. It is dedicated to celebrating things that make you happy. It’s a known fact that happiness is contagious and sharing your happiness can bring a smile to someone’s face. The month reminds us that happiness can be found in even little things that we might not notice and that spreading the same joy amongst others can help make the world a better place.

Happiness Happens is an organization that was started by a group called the Secret Society of Happy People founded by Pamela Gail Johnson in August 1998. It was formed to celebrate and embrace happiness in each and every form. Ms. Johnson felt that a lot of people suppressed themselves from talking about their happiness and did not know how to express their feelings. For the same, the group intended to create a positive environment and encouraged the members to share joyful stories of their lives and moments that they cherished the most. Members began to see the positive side of everything and while hearing happy stories, they were able to recognize instances from their own life that gave them happiness.

In 2000, the secret society decided to take their celebration on a global platform and declared August 8 as ‘Happiness Happens Day’ and the whole month as the ‘Happiness Happens’ month. The group has 2 mottos which are “Happiness Happens” and the other is “Don’t Even Think of Raining on My Parade”.

One way that we can make happiness happen is to visit the Because of You table in the ASB lobby on Wednesday, August 17th from 10am-2pm.  The Wellbeing Council will have note cards, stickers, and pens on hand for you to write personalized notes to people on the Bellevue University campus that you want to spread some happiness to.  These notes will be delivered so that you can surprise your special people at BU. If you can’t come to campus, you can have a note sent digitally by clicking here Go and make happiness happen in August at Bellevue University!
